Nike Tiempo Legend 6 Pirlo: The Thinking Man’s Football Boot
Released date - September 2016

Introduction:
There are signature football boots.
And then there are boots that feel like they were designed specifically for the person wearing them.
The Nike Tiempo Legend 6 Pirlo Edition is very much the latter.
Released in September 2016, this limited-edition Tiempo was created for one of football’s most distinctive characters: Andrea Pirlo.
Elegant. Intelligent. Unhurried.
A player who seemed to operate at a different speed to everyone around him.
And rather than simply putting his name on a Tiempo and changing the colour, Nike looked somewhere much more personal for inspiration.
Wine.
Andrea Pirlo: Footballer, Connoisseur, Winemaker
Pirlo's connection with wine wasn't some marketing story invented by Nike.
It was part of his life.
Growing up in Italy, Pirlo spent time harvesting grapes at his family's vineyards. That passion eventually developed into a family winery, Pratum Coller, giving him a second identity away from football.
So when Nike began creating his first signature Tiempo, the inspiration was obvious.
The boot would celebrate both sides of Pirlo.
The footballer.
And the winemaker.
The result was one of the most sophisticated football boot releases Nike had produced.
The Colour of Wine
The first thing you notice about the Pirlo Tiempo is the colour.
Rather than the traditional black, white or bright performance colours dominating football boots at the time, Nike gave the Legend 6 a rich merlot finish.
It was inspired by the colour of wine itself.
The premium Alegria leather upper gave the boot a luxurious appearance, while the deep burgundy tone made it look unlike almost anything else in the Tiempo line-up.
It was understated.
But unmistakably different.
And, rather appropriately for Pirlo, it didn't need to shout.
Four Stars for Italy
Look closely and there are plenty of details hidden within the design.
Four gold stars appear on the heel counter and soleplate, representing Italy's four FIFA World Cup victories.
The Italian flag also appears on the lace aglet. It's a small detail, but it says a lot about the thinking behind the boot. This wasn't simply an Andrea Pirlo colourway.
It was a celebration of Italian football.
And Pirlo was one of its greatest representatives.
"Aged Since '94"
Perhaps the best detail of all is hidden underneath your feet.
The Pirlo Tiempo features a genuine cork sockliner with the words:
"AGED SINCE '94"
It's a clever reference to both Pirlo's football journey and the idea of wine improving with age.
The same phrase also appeared on the polka-dot presentation box.
And that's where this release becomes particularly interesting from a collector's perspective.
Nike didn't just change the boot.
They created an entire presentation around the story.

More Than Just a Football Boot
The packaging itself was designed to resemble a bottle of wine.
Inside, the boots were accompanied by an additional performance sockliner, adding another layer to what was already a very special release.
It's this attention to detail that separates the Pirlo Tiempo from a standard player edition.
Everything has a reason. The colour. The stars. The Italian flag. The cork. The wording. Even the packaging.
It all leads back to the same idea: football and wine, two passions brought together through Andrea Pirlo.

Underneath all of the Pirlo details was the Tiempo Legend 6 — one of Nike's great leather football boots.
The sixth generation of the Tiempo continued the silo's reputation for combining a premium leather feel with modern football boot technology.
And that was an important part of what made this release work.
Nike hadn't turned the Tiempo into a novelty boot.
It remained a serious performance football boot.
The Pirlo Edition simply gave it a personality that was entirely its own.
The Perfect Boot for Pirlo
Perhaps the most interesting thing about the Pirlo Tiempo is how perfectly it suited its namesake. At a time when football boots were becoming increasingly bright, aggressive and heavily branded, Pirlo's signature edition went in completely the opposite direction.
It was refined. Subtle. Almost luxurious.
Which was exactly how Pirlo himself played.
There was no frantic movement. No unnecessary effort. Just control, vision and extraordinary technique.
He made difficult things look easy. And Nike created a boot that felt the same way.
The Godfather of Football
Pirlo's image in football has always been slightly different. He wasn't the traditional speedster or explosive athlete. He was the footballer's footballer. The player other players watched.
The deep-lying playmaker who could dictate an entire match with the weight of a pass.
His career took him through Brescia, Inter, AC Milan and Juventus, while his international career brought a World Cup winner's medal with Italy in 2006.
By the time this Tiempo arrived in 2016, Pirlo had already established himself as one of the great midfielders of his generation.
The boot therefore arrived at exactly the right moment. Not as a celebration of youthful potential. But as a celebration of experience. Of craft. Of getting better with age.
Just like a fine wine.

Why Collectors Love the Pirlo Tiempo
For collectors, this is where the story becomes particularly compelling. There are thousands of player-associated football boots. But relatively few feel genuinely connected to the personality of the player.
The Pirlo Edition does.
Every major design decision relates back to his life, his heritage or his football career.
It also captures an interesting period in Nike's history.
The Tiempo Legend 6 was still proudly associated with premium leather, while Nike was increasingly pushing limited editions and highly personalised player stories. The Pirlo Tiempo sits right in the middle of that transition.
Classic football boot.
Modern Nike performance.
Italian football heritage.
And one of the game's most iconic personalities.
A Boot With a Story
Perhaps that's ultimately why this Tiempo remains so memorable. It isn't the loudest boot Nike produced in 2016. It isn't covered in fluorescent colours. It doesn't rely on an outrageous graphic or futuristic design.
Instead, it tells a story.A story about an Italian boy growing up around vineyards. A midfielder who became a World Cup winner. A player who turned passing into an art form.
And a football boot inspired by his passion for wine.
"Aged Since '94."
It's one of those little details that sums up the entire release. Some boots are designed to be noticed. Some are designed to be remembered.
The Nike Tiempo Legend 6 Pirlo Edition is definitely one of the latter.
Some boots are products.
Some boots are pieces of football history.
